As I approach my 6th month of pregnancy – ok I’m going to stop right there. 6th month of pregnancy? Everybody told me it would go quickly, but that’s just crazy. Only 3 more months til I can drink a bottle of wine and run 10km again.* These are genuine life goals.
The old school view of healthy eating is one of bland ingredients and overall tastelessness: unsalted lean meat, piles of flavourless peas and carrots and a bowl of lettuce. Of course, nobody actually makes ‘healthy’ meals like that anymore (you can serve up the above dish and have it be completely devoid of nutritional value if you cook it wrong), but there’s still widespread doubt around just how yummy healthy cooking can be.
Pregnancy is a magical and miraculous time in a woman’s life. It’s also a time when her hormones go haywire, she balloons to a previously unheard of size and her body is taken over by an alien invader. I’ve been lucky so far, it’s been an easy ride.
A few weeks ago I mentioned in a post that I was craving sugary foods more than usual. The reason I gave was feeling especially stressed, and therefore my body was out of synch with its usual patterns. That was true, but it wasn’t the only reason! Today marks my fourth month of pregnancy.
The days are getting cooler and you need your slippers for your Monday night Game of Thrones sesh. Winter is on its way… I used to hate winter, but that’s because I spent too long in London where winter is less a season and more a state of the nation.
Recently my life got extremely stressful. It all started earlier this year with a promotion at work which, while a welcome new challenge, came with more responsibility and a notably higher degree of stress – which lead to me putting the breaks on blogging. When you have tough days at work, the last thing in the world you can stomach is an evening sitting in front of your laptop.
This was meant to be a recipe post about Raspberry Chia Slices that I made over the weekend. Somehow it turned into my view on social media and the health industry. I make no apologies – sometimes I have more to say than which smoothie you should have for breakfast!
A month ago I wrote about starting a new workout – the incredibly popular BBG (Bikini Body Guide) plan by Kayla Itsines, an instagram superstar who turned her passion for fitness and personal training into a worldwide phenomenon. She has inspired a fitness cult that now sees more than 3.7 million followers across the world.
I post a lot of recipes for sweet treats and healthy snacks, but I haven’t really done anything on what to make for dinner. Dinner is the meal we often most look forward to. It’s a chance to cook without time pressure, as opposed to breakfast when you’re always running late, and it’s often a social cook with your partner or maybe your kids.
I started a new workout yesterday called Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide, a workout plan that was introduced to me by my sister in law while we were visiting the family on our trip. It’s not that I’m unsatisfied with my current workout plan, but every now and then I like to shake things up and find new sources of inspiration.
I have just returned from holiday and I feel like a cross between a stuffed Christmas turkey and a whale who ate all the pies. It’s so bad I had to mix my metaphors. This is a common problem when we go on holiday, as the thrill of newly discovered restaurants and food experiences far outweighs the increasingly faint little voice in our heads telling us to be sensible with what we eat.
I was at the gym yesterday doing a Grid class – have you ever done one? They are the shizzle! They combine high intensity toning and cardio exercises for 20 seconds per exercise in rounds of 6. The first 3 rounds you’re like yeah man, I Am The Terminator.
